About Virtual Colonoscopy
Colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States, resulting in nearly 60,000 deaths each year. Why? Because fewer than 40% of adults have ever been screened. Each year there are more deaths from colorectal cancer than from breast cancer and AIDS combined. At the same time Colorectal cancer has a 90% cure rate when detected early.
Virtual Colonoscopy is a revolutionary method of screening for colorectal cancer and other diseases of the colon and bowel. It is a non-invasive procedure that lets doctors find abnormal growths in the colon through computer-generated 3-Dimensional images. It is faster and more accurate than conventional colonoscopy, less embarrassing, and although you go through a similar preparation, a Virtual Colonoscopy exam:
- Is more accurate than conventional colonscopy
- Takes less than 15 minutes
- Requires no sedation
- Is non-invasive
- Eliminates the risk of perforation with a scope
- Can scan the entire colon and is not limited to the length of the traditional colonscopy’s scope
Traditional Colonoscopy fails to visualize the complete colon in 10-20% of patients. In such patients, Virtual Colonoscopy is an ideal solution. You should consider having a Virtual Colonoscopy if:
- You are over the age of 50
- You have a family history of colon cancer
- You have a personal history of breast, uterine or ovarian cancer
- You have chronic ulcerative colitis
- Your diet is associated with high intakes of well-done, fried or barbequed meats
- You have been exposed to asbestos
- You have history of inflammatory bowel disease
