About Nuclear Medicine
Nuclear medicine imaging is among the safest diagnostic imaging tests available and an excellent diagnostic tool because it shows not only the anatomy (structure) of an organ or body part, but the function of the organ as well. In this case vital processes such as blood circulation, metabolism and vitality of organs and tumors can be displayed as "functional images".
NYU Medical at Columbus is equipped with the most advanced Nuclear Medicine System. Our e.Cam Variable Angle System allows us to optimize image quality for whole body, cardiac and general studies. Some of our most common nuclear medicine applications include:
- Diagnosis and treatment of hyperthyroidism (Grave's Disease)
- Cardiac stress tests to analyze heart function
- Bone scans for orthopedic injuries
- Lung scans for blood clots
- Liver and gall bladder procedures to diagnose abnormal function or blockages
- Renal scan to asses kidney function
The amount of radiation in a nuclear medicine procedure is comparable to that received during a diagnostic x-ray. Nuclear medicine procedures are painless and do not require anesthesia.
